Between Selves is an exhibition that features the work of three artists who question the concept of self in relation to their own experience. Their existence is confronted by exploring issues related to appearance, mental and physical health through self-portraiture.
Jocelyn Allen mainly works with photography, video and performance. She is often present within her work, whilst exploring the themes of representation, self-esteem, anxiety, hiding and revealing, and identity.Covering The Carpet is a performance in contorting, balancing and/or leaping her body into poses, in order to attempt to conceal her pubic area.
Paloma Tendero explores the physical and psychological relationships that spring from inherited determinism. Through photography and sculpture the artist analysed the body beyond its physical structure; understanding how our genetic and biological characteristics remain outside of our control, rendering the body vulnerable to an unrequested destiny.
Silvia Gentili’s practice explores stories that belong to the personal and political realm through the use of photography, film and performance.Her research investigates the concepts of trauma and memory in connection to the body, landscape and storytelling. The intimacy of a strange being unravels the frustrating and disarming experiences of life trying to find a way not to vanish. It is an act of resistance to overcome the unbearable sense of melancholy.
