Tangle TEaser: Untangling the Knots of Female Power

Acting as a marker of beliefs and attitudes, the way hair has been used as a material over time reveals our relationships to some of the major concerns that affect our societies - from a reflection of gender identity to a weapon for Iranian women, as a measure to gauge racial purity to a material that provokes both desire and disgust. The exhibition will explore how artists use hair to examine themes of lineage, conditions, tradition, gender, sexuality, politics and liberation.
The exhibition is part of Women Artists’ Art Week World, an initiative celebrating the work of female-identifying artists, and will feature work by Anouska Samms, Isabel Castro Jung, Laila Tara H, Paloma Tendero, Rosie Gibbens, Shannon Bono, Camilla Hanney and Shirin Fathi.

BODY LANGUAGE

This October, Messum’s Wiltshire is devoting its spaces to contemporary female artists. Each makes work centring around the body, using either their own or other bodies to reflect upon ideas around power, pleasure, and disgust. All of these women has interrogated the nature of flesh – abstracting it into sculpture, focussing on its surface or recreating it from porcelain. They ask the viewer to think about the female form and the politics of the gaze. Bodies are presented as objects or even deconstructed, far removed from the idealised nudes of previous generations. The body becomes a painful vessel or a tool – something to be used and viewed rather than admired or sexualised. These works question women’s roles – as makers, mothers, subjects, objects, lovers, to name but a few.

Working across a variety of media including sculpture, drawing, installation, textile, ceramics and photography, this exhibition brings together the work of eight artists who explore the significant role of female/non-binary mythical creatures in relation to gender identity within feminist contexts.

I had the pleasure to write my first article about my art practice for the Royal Photographic Society - Women in Photography Magazine

‘Corpus Mentis’ 2021
Really pleased to have my work in this digital exhibition Co-curated by Hikari Yokoyama and Sarabande Director Trino Verkade. ‘Corpus Mentis' showcases the individualised explorations of the body of seven female artists, including Shannon Bono, Camilla Hanney, Sian Fan, Roberts Wood, Kristina Walsh, Auroboros and myself.

“Our bodies exist as temples that inhibit burden, vulnerability, strength, healing, fantasy and technology. Our body is an object, seen from the outside by others both housing and embodying a set of beliefs that form our identities, our cultures, our race and our history, readable from the outside. Our bodies are also our subjects: the locus of desire, of thought, of action. Often misunderstood as the act of perceiving and the judgement of being perceived cross paths”

Live Flesh

In this radical reimagining of female bodily experiences, artists Shannon Bono, Camilla Hanney and Paloma Tendero, explore what it means to inhabit a female body today, and how we can break myths, taboos and archetypal representations of women’s bodies that have and continue to dominate visual culture. Though their works are visually distinct and deploy different medium - painting, photography, sculpture and installation - they share an iconoclastic vision of female bodies that forces us to reconsider the ways we are represented.
